Hygiene and cleanings in Tulsa
A cleaning should be built around your mouth, not around a schedule. We tell you which kind you need and why.
Most adults do well with a cleaning and exam every six months. Some do not, and being told otherwise is how gum disease gets missed. At Diamond Dental your hygiene plan is set by what we actually see in your mouth and on your X-rays: how much tartar is below the gum line, whether the gums bleed, whether bone has been lost, and how quickly buildup comes back for you personally.
Regular maintenance cleanings
This is the standard cleaning most people know. Our hygienist removes plaque and tartar from above and just below the gum line, polishes the teeth, and checks your gum measurements. Dr. Hanna then does the exam, reads the X-rays, and screens for decay, cracks, and oral cancer. If everything is stable, you are back in six months.
Our hygienist has been practicing in the Tulsa area for more than twenty years. That experience is the reason small changes get caught early, when they are still a watch item rather than a filling.
Deep cleanings
A deep cleaning, called scaling and root planing, is for patients whose gum disease has moved below the gum line. Tartar under the gums holds bacteria that a regular cleaning cannot reach, and it slowly destroys the bone that holds your teeth in. The deep cleaning removes that buildup from the root surfaces and smooths them so the gums can reattach.
It is usually done in two visits, one side of the mouth at a time, and the area is numbed first. Most people are surprised by how straightforward it is. After a deep cleaning we normally move you to a shorter recall, often every three or four months, until the gums are stable again.
Cleanings for the whole family
Children are welcome here, and a child cleaning is its own appointment, not a shortened adult one. For kids that means fluoride, sealants on the back teeth where decay usually starts, and a first visit that is mostly about getting comfortable in the chair. Families often book back to back so one trip covers everyone.
What personalized actually means
Two people with the same teeth can need completely different care. A patient who grinds needs a night guard discussion. A patient on medication that dries the mouth needs more frequent recalls because dry mouth speeds up decay. A patient with a history of gum disease needs periodontal maintenance rather than a standard cleaning. You will hear which category you are in, in plain language, and what it costs before we book it.
Common questions
The questions patients ask us most about this treatment, answered plainly.
How often should I get my teeth cleaned
Every six months works for most adults, but not for everyone. If you have had gum disease, grind your teeth, smoke, or build tartar quickly, three or four months is often the right interval. Dr. Hanna sets the interval from your gum measurements and X-rays and explains the reason.
What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning
A regular cleaning removes buildup from the crown of the tooth and just under the gum line. A deep cleaning goes further down the root surface to remove tartar that has collected in gum pockets, and it is done with the area numbed. Deep cleanings treat active gum disease, so they are a treatment rather than a maintenance visit.
Does a deep cleaning hurt
The area is numbed first, so the appointment itself is comfortable. Gums can be tender for a day or two afterward and mild soreness is normal. Nitrous gas is available if you want it.
